Every August 15th, Italians pause to celebrate Ferragosto, a summer holiday that brings together history, tradition, and—of course—great food.

At DaTerra Cucina, where every pan and dish tells a story, we’re inspired by the way Ferragosto brings families around the table, under the sun, and into the joy of Italian summer.

A Celebration with Ancient Roots

Ferragosto’s origins go back over 2,000 years. The name comes from Feriae Augusti, or “Augustus’ rest,” a holiday established by Emperor Augustus in 18 BCE. It marked the end of the agricultural season and was a time for Roman workers—and even their animals—to rest and rejoice.

Later, Catholic tradition layered in a new meaning: August 15 became the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, honoring the belief that Mary was taken up to heaven. Over time, these two threads—ancient and sacred—wove together to form the modern Ferragosto.

How Italians Celebrate Today

From the bustling streets of Rome to the peaceful coastlines of Sicily, Ferragosto is about taking a break, enjoying life, and—most importantly—eating well.

  • Vacation Vibes: Many Italians head to the beach, mountains, or countryside. It’s peak summer holiday time, and many cities quiet down as locals escape for some well-earned rest.

  • Food and Family: Long lunches, outdoor barbecues, and seaside picnics are the heartbeat of Ferragosto. Tables are filled with family, regional dishes and seasonal flavors.

  • Festivals and Fireworks: Towns come alive with music, dancing, and dazzling displays. Each region adds its own flavor to the celebration.

A Ferragosto Table, DaTerra Style

At DaTerra Cucina, we believe every meal is a celebration—and Ferragosto is the perfect reason to gather your loved ones and cook something from the heart. Whether you’re roasting, searing, or sautéing, this is the moment to bring a little Italian tradition into your kitchen.

It’s not just about the food. It’s about slowing down, sharing stories, and soaking up the joy of summer.
